clarification on some of my displeasure with Brooklyn's skyline and satirical mimicry of high-rise living...
In drawings such as Highrise of Homes, and Meanwhile, In Reality… I was inspired by the SITE architects’ proposal for an apartment building intended to offer its inhabitants a presence and identity in the typically faceless cityscape. The SITE plan demonstrates several uniquely designed household units within each of its floors. My versions however, are composed of more generic apartments found in Brooklyn and Queens. Mine are also structurally unstable, uninhabitable and absurd. I consider my adaptations a satire of SITE’s design.
In the drawing Meanwhile, In Reality… I replicated several of my wobbly high-rises containing the ordinary, un-stylized tenements. I feel the regularity of these odd or well known structures as seen in my drawing, parodies the context for SITE’s impulse to respond to a “faceless” or unidentified cityscape.
I also sensed that their critique of the usual high-rise along with their desire for a more noticeable human existence amidst those structures seemed obstinate to an ecological incentive. I thought it was important for an urban plan to weigh the effectiveness of SITE’s idea and motivation or reasoning behind it. In both drawings I tried to create a dramatic sky with severe weather. While I felt my backdrops are visually suitable to my illogical structures, I hoped they would also prompt some analysis for the environment in which structures like them may exist or are called for.
